Have You Been Unknowingly Undermining Your Diet?

By Joseph Howard

Everybody knows that the most beneficial foods we can eat are whole grains, lean meats in addition to healthy fats. These are the foods that give people protein along with energy. They keep our bodies balanced nutritionally but don't stuff us full of empty calories which will later have to be burned off at the gym. Did you know though that some of the diet foods you've been consuming may have been hindering your ability to lose weight? They could even be keeping you from slimming down altogether! Check out a few of the food items that might be assisting you to accidentally sabotage your diet.

Sports Drinks aren't serving you at all. You've possibly been thinking that the sports drink is the proper way to help your whole body feel greater after a workout. Most medical doctors recognize, however, that if your workout is shorter than ninety minutes, drinking water should be fine. Sports drinks are loaded with sugar and calories and a lot of other things you don't need like artificial flavors and colors which defeat any attempts at eating only natural products. Choose chocolate milk for your drink as a substitute. The sugars in the chocolate helps your muscles start to heal and the calcium in milk keeps your bones strong.

You do not need protein shakes. So many people believe that consuming a protein shake is a good way to stop cravings when it isn't meal time. What you will be actually doing, especially if the rest of your diet consists of whole and healthy foods, is helping your body overdose on protein. No matter what others imagine, protein is not stored in the muscles, it is stored in your body as fat. If you've already had your daily allotment of protein that day, your system will just keep the extra in your fat cells for later and that won't enable you to drop pounds or inches.

Pre-packaged deli meat seriously isn't as good for you as you may well think. You may believe that a sandwich made of whole wheat bread and pre-packaged lean deli meat makes for a good lunch. The real truth is that pre-packaged deli meat is crammed full of preservatives and about a third of your recommended daily sodium intake. This can be especially bothersome if you are prone to heart disease. Rather than purchasing pre-packaged deli meat, choose some home cooked chicken or the deli meat that is newly sliced at your deli counter. Sure these are a lot more expensive options but they are tremendously healthier for you.

There are all sorts of things that we assume will help us lose weight: eating a whole wheat bagel in the morning, for example is actually a lot worse for you than a bowl of oatmeal with some cinnamon sprinkled into it for flavor. Ask your medical professional exactly what the best means for you to eat healthfully are and then follow those directions. If you are cautious about precisely what you take in and treat your body well, losing weight should not be that big of an issue for you!
