Information On Gymnastics In Delaware

By Annabelle Holman

Gymnastics refers to a sport exercised for various reasons in the current society. Some of the major reasons why people get involved in this sport are to compete at different levels worldwide and for special military operations. Some people get involved during their leisure time as a hobby while others as an exercise for health purposes and body fitness. Gymnastics in Delaware is a very developed and valued sport. The place has professional coaches who train gymnasts to high levels.

The term gymnastics has its origin in the Greek language. When translated into the English language it means to practice naked. In old Greece, the term was used on all exercises performed in gymnasiums. Gymnasiums were places where male athletes exercised without clothes. The exercises were included in Olympics during competitions. Currently, some of those exercises have been separated into completely different fields.

As a competitive sport, coordination, agility, physical strength, flexibility, body balance, and power are the aspects tested. Gymnastics is governed by an international body. The body has affiliations with all local bodies that govern the sport in various countries worldwide. The commonest and most popular category of the sport is artistic gymnastics.

This sport comprises training up to different levels. The lowest competitive level that has been sanctioned in the US is level 5. Lower levels except level 4 are viewed as being non-competitive and competitions are not held in such levels. Demonstration of a mastery of all skills in level 4 and the other lower levels is required before one proceeds to competitive levels. As such, gyms may hold competitions to test ability in kids in level 4. Level 4 simply familiarizes and prepares kids for competitions.

Artistic gymnastics include events for both men and women. Events practiced by women include balance beams, vault, floor exercise, and uneven bars. On the other hand, those for men include high bar, parallel bar, vault, still rings, pommel horse, and floor exercises. Some events are done by single participants while others require team effort to accomplish. Others can also be done by individuals as well as a team. All the events named above are improvements from the exercises practiced in the Ancient Greece.

Participants can participate in the many disciplines comprised in gymnastic sports. Trampolining, team gym, tumbling, and rhythmic, acrobatic, and aerobatic events form some of basic disciplines. Participants from various age groups are allowed to take part with the youngest participants being two years of age. Difficulty is increased as the age and individual ability increases. Routines last a very short time, but they are highly exhausting physically. The routines test strength, awareness of limits, flexibility, and endurance in individuals.

This sport has some disciplines that are only meant for female participants. For example, men are disallowed from participating in rhythmic events at competitive levels. Generally, participants are free what they want during performances. Individuals and team members choose exercises they want to execute although some are mandatory. During a performance individuals can execute any exercises of their own choice.

Previously, athletes were awarded scores out of 10. However, the score scheme has been changed and now participants can earn points without a limit. Points are earned basing on factors like completeness, difficulty, and accuracy.
